General
No. 93, “Minetta” is a return to the “Victorian Ladies” theme from the late 70's and early 80's.  She is sometimes confused with “Adeline’ (No. 137) who appears to be based on the same model with similarly styled hair.  To our knowledge this is the only time the same model may have been used by a single manufacturer.  It appears that the same model may have been used for Meek’s “Bertha” (No. 99) and H.D. Beach’s similar waitress with serving tray, sometimes referred to as “young Bertha.”

As a name for girls Minetta has its root in Old German, and means "determined protector" (we guess a lot of things needed protecting back in the day).  Minetta is an alternate form of Minna (Old German): variant spelling of Wilhelmina.  In the US it has never been a particularly popular name; it entered the list in 1890-1899 and reached its top position of No. 1916 in the U.S. in the 1890s, although the variations Mina and Minna currently do make the top 1000.

We have been unable to find either a literary character or subject of a painting/artwork with this name, nor is there any artist signature on any example we’ve seen.  Sahling has two entries in his workbook for “Minetta”—the first is from December 1908 and lists “9 ½” plate “Minetta.”  The second entry is from January 1909 for “4 ½” stock tray “Minetta”; however we don’t find any entry that would correspond to a full sized tray.

Size & Shape and Advertising Placement
No. 93 occurs most often as a tip tray and Dresden Art Plate versions are also not uncommon.  As a tray it seems to occur most frequently as a convex pie and as a sign it shows up as a curled corner sign.  We have recorded some other size/shapes for this design but admit that in the early days we may have confused
“Adeline’ (No. 137) for No. 93.

Hager & Price
Hager does discuss this design in his section “The Ladies” which deals with the Dresden Art Plates, most of which also occur as trays.  He notes that “Minetta” is No. 93 and that “she is copyrighted 1908 and carries number 93.  She is rare both on trays and the Art Plates.”  It is included in his catalog.  Since there are a limited number of full-size tray examples, brewery versions tend to go for strong prices with an better than average example from Everett Brewing of Everett, WA going for $1800 many years ago.  Non-brewery examples tend to go for more pedestrian prices with some exceptions for nice examples.
